George + Ginger SoTa Tunic & Dress

It's no secret that I LOVE the George + Ginger SoTa Tunic & Dress. I've made several and wear them frequently. I've found that I prefer my godets made with a holey fabric. I don't care for a traditional lace, but a more solid knit with some holes that might make a pattern that is lace like, but not as holey as lace. Got it?

The SoTa is intended to be made with lightweight knits. You can use cotton lycra, but the effect of the godets will be completely different.

The SoTa has amazing twirl factor. I've never made the dress version. That would probably not go over well using the holey fabric that I love.  I really love the tunic length. You can see in this photo that my holey fabric is like a knit eyelet.

I loved how it looked with my Zenith & Quasar Nebulous print athletic brushed poly.

The longest part of making a SoTa is cutting all  the pieces out. Sewing a SoTa is actually very quick. I like to make my SoTas in multiples. I feel more efficient sewing them when I can whip through them quickly. I tend to cut my godets out first then the body and sleeves. So of course I had to make this time. If I hadn't been trying to get a few other things done - like unpacking - I probably would have made another.

This one is made with a plush brushed poly from Zenith & Quasar in a blue floral. I happened to have this lace like knit in a seafoam green that matched perfectly. I got this lace like knit from the fabric district and have bought it in a couple of colors. My very first SoTa was made with some in a blue color.

I made both of my SoTas with short sleeves and hemmed both with a rolled hem. On this one I also rolled hem my sleeves because I was almost out of the thread I was using on hem. But I think I'm going to cut it off and hem the sleeves normally.

The one downside to using a holey knit on the godets is hemming. I've decided a like a rolled hem best. But one trick I have learned is to do a narrow serger hem first and then do the rolled hem and go over it twice. I find that gives the cleanest rolled hem on holey knits.

Made Whimsy Spring 2019 Preorder

Made Whimsy has so many beautiful prints at preroder right now. I already blogged about the Steampunk Floral HERE.  Now I want to show you the gorgeous Orange and Blossoms print.

I really love this golden yellow color. It's what made me ask Mandy for this print, And yes, it does have a lot of pink - which I normally don't like. But this combination is too beautiful to not not love.

I made the George + Ginger SoTa with my fabric. I used the Plum Dream Solid for the godets. I just love the godets on the SoTa!

I have to admit, when I ordered the Plum Dream Solid, I was not looking at the listing. I was expecting a very purply plum color. I was quite surprised when I got this, what I would call Magenta color. I wondered what the heck I was going to do with it. I think it was perfect for this Orange and Blossoms print.

I told myself earlier this year to stop making things that had pink in them, as they rarely get worn. But I'm thinking this SoTa will get worn a lot this spring.

Saturday I woke up to a stye in my right eye and some nasty drizzly and cold weather. So what do I do, I spend all morning in my sewing room looking to see what I could make with my scraps. Made Whimsy prints are now printed on 66" wide fabric and the dream solids are 68" wide, I had enough to make another top!

I made the Love Notions Tidal Top. I love that I was able to get the front center panel and sleeves from my Orange and Blossoms print scrap.

I also still have a good sized scrap left of the Plum Dream Solid. I'm passing on the remainder to Sharon. I have a feeling she can find a use for it.

Made Whimsy Backstage Pass

I love the new round open at Made Whimsy! It features some amazing musicians, hipster animals, and an amazing brick wall print.

I couldn't resist taking photos at the Wylie City Hall.

I match the wall!

These bricks are amazing. As soon as I finished my short I knew I had to come here for photos.

If you are wondering about my top - this is the George + Ginger SoTa. The bricks are cotton lycra and my godets are a rayon spandex jersey. This combination makes the godets hang behind the bodice panels. I think it looks kinda cool.

It was super windy when I took photos and I'm including this one because my hair looks cool blowing all around.

I love how these photos came out. Don't be surprised if I go there for more photos in the future.

Mandy also sent me an Adam Levine adult panel and a kids panel. I love Maroon 5 and was totally jealous when she went to the concert.

I knew I wasn't likely to wear a t-shirt out and about with Adam on it, so I decided he was perfect to take to bed with me. I made the KZJO Studio Poppy Shirt for a comfy pajama top. This pattern is FREE!

I used the kids panel to make the Madalynne Noelle high waisted briefs. This pattern is also FREE! The back of my shirt is Dreamy Blueberry Knit. It's truly the dreamiest cotton lycra I have felt. So soft and silky smooth and the same weight as the custom prints. It's also at preorder - so be sure to stock up.

I just couldn't end with a picture of my behind - so here's my shirt again. If you look close - you will see I used a bit of the Dreamy Eggplant Knit for the sleeve binding.

George + Ginger SoTa Tunic and Dress

George + Ginger has a new top & dress that will knock your socks off - the SoTa Tunic and Dress! This fun pattern is on sale through October 7th for $6.75. I made the tunic version with short sleeves and I'm dying to make one in sweater knit for fall.

If you are looking at my photo and thinking to yourself that this SoTa tunic takes a ton of fabric, you are wrong! I had a very wonky cut of this watercolor wildflower athletic brushed poly from Zenith and Quasar in my stash. I've made several things from this fabric, so the piece I had left wouldn't have worked for many projects.

But this tunic has 4 panels on the front and 4 on the back, plus 8 godets. So, if you take your time and cut each panel individually, you can get them all in on what amounts to be less than a yard.

The short sleeves needed a wider space than the body panels, so I made sure to plot out where I would cut them first, but cut them last. I figured I could cut them from my godet fabric if I ran out of my main fabric.

My godets were cut from a beautiful blue lace I found at Wherehouse Fabrics. The godets took approximately a half yard. I cut them one at a time to fit them in as close together as I could to waste as little fabric as possible.

I did take 2" out of the length for my height. I also lowered the godet placement marks by 2" since they were very high on my short torso. That required me to shorten the godets by 2". I love this length on me as a shirt, but think I'll make one without shortening the pattern for a longer tunic length.

The SoTa has multiple sleeve options and a dress length that hits above the knees. It's made for knits, but I have an idea to make one with woven godets. While I made a very spring like SoTa, I'm going to make a sweater knit one very soon with long sleeves. It's currently still hitting 90 degrees in Texas, but Fall should be here soon.
