Week Ending October 30, 2022

I had so much fun this week, that not much sewing took place. On Tuesday, I went to Stitchhouse for a meet and greet with Kaffe Fassett! He had so many good stories to share.

I've been cutting my scrappy bits and putting them in this pail. I plan to use it as stuffing in the future. If I can find the time, I'm hoping to makecsome stuffed trees to decorate my fireplace with and I'll stuff them with this scrappy stuffing. Smaug discovered the pail this week and thought it was a cozy place to sit.

I received a few more quilty wishes. I sent out a few more this week.

I worked on my Utter Chaos quilt - pattern coming soon from Kelly Renay.

I posted a blog on Minerva about the joggers I made my husband.

I posted a blog about the Pinot Vines Quilt Pattern released by TJ Wright. See previous post for it.

I won 1st place in the Day of the Dead Quilt Show! I was also the only entry for the medium size category.

I won a cash prize, a giftvcard to fabric fanatics, an assortment of fat quarters,  and a cute wall hanging and luggage tage from Fanatical Fusions.

I ended my Sunday working on my Utter Chaos quilt.

I will keep working on my Utter Chaos quilt this week, then I'll go back to finishing up my WIPs.

Pinot Vines Quilt Pattern by TJ Wright

I had the pleasure to test the Pinot Vines Quilt Pattern for TJ Wright. TJ said that this pattern was inspired by the shape of the vines at a vineyard she visited. I'm not a wine drinker, but I decided to use a wine color as inspiration for my quilt.

I took out a solid wine fabric from my stash and looked to see what prints I had that matched. I happened to have two beautiful Anna Maria Horner prints that were gifted to be by Scott Fortunoff of Jaftex fabrics. He sent me a partial bolt of each print, so I didn't feel any guilt cutting into the fabric. I  still have a few yards left.

The pattern called for a 4th color and I decided to use a grey. However, I ran out of the grey I had chosen and could not find a matching shade locally. I ended up using a second shade of grey that was slightly darker. I used the two different greys in different pieces so it looks intentional to have them different colors.

I loved how complex of a design this quilt looked, yet the blocks are all the same and were fairly simple to construct.

I really love how the two prints play together and how the solid wine color pulls everything together. The grey solids and grey background of one of the prints give a dappled light appearance to the quilt.

This quilt is definitely one that benefits from being laid out on a design wall before you begin sewing. It was easy to get a block turned the wrong way. I had to seam rip and fix one row in the process and I blame it on not using my design wall. If I could have seen all the blocks laid out as I was sewing, it would have been much easier to make sure I had each block in the correct orientation.

I  always love getting at least one photo of the light shining through the quilt top when possible. I'm still debating on what I want for the backing of this quilt.

I took my photos at sunrise earlier in the year and it was the perfect time for one on the dock. Normally it's too sunny, but I was there before the sun was above the tree tops.

This is TJ's first quilt pattern she has released. I can't wait to see what she has  in store next. She makes some amazing art quilts that have me so  inspired. See her website at https://tjwrightquilts.com/

I got so much done this week and it feels so good! We had a short cold snap and I grabbed a photo of me in my ochre Fortuna Joggers thst I made recently. I love this pattern from the Sew Beautiful book by Kennis Wong. I made my top many years ago.

I finally finished my Retrogradient Quilt (pattern by Needle Down Chin Up).

I quilted my Linking Lives Quilt-Pattern by Andrea Haverinen.

I then quilted my Crystallized Quilt- Pattern by the Crafty Capuchin.

I mailed off some Quilty Wishes. I love doing this Instagram act of kindness each year.

I received some quilty wishes. I asked for EPP supplies and orphan blocks.

I quilted my Bug Quilt Pattern by Rope & Anchor Trading Co.

I got my Tangles 2 wall hanging hung.

Here's my stack of quilts. I need to bind the top 3.

I plan to get my binding ready for these quilts this week.  I will probably get back to work on a pattern test for Kelly Renay of the Utter Chaos Quilt. I made a few blocks, and want to go ahead and make a quilt.

Vintage Lace Quilt made with the Spaced Out Collection

If you know me, you know that plain white is my least favorite color for everything. I refuse to own a white automobile, will not paint a wall in my house anything close to white, and very rarely wear anything that is solid white (I actually can't recall the last time I wore anything that was white). This solid white aversion follows into my sewing and quilting. I do love a good low volume white print for quilting and was thrilled when I received the Spaced Out Collection by Chelsea Designworks for Studio e Fabrics.

This collection is 20 soft grey prints on a solid white fabric. A few of the deigns also have a few colors in the design. I knew I would make a quilt that had a lot of background fabric to show off these fun low volume prints and decided to pair them with some solid colors that were inspired by the colors in some of the more colorful prints. I picked the Vintage Lace Quilt pattern from Lo and Behold Stitchery.

I have admired this quilt pattern for a long time. I knew it would be perfect as it looked like a fairly quick sew. All the pieces are either rectangles or half square triangles. It did go together really quick - even with me making a color change out near of my piecing.

I made the throw size and it's a LARGE throw. As I pieced it all together I started wondering why I decided to make such a huge quilt. I knew I was going to have to quilt this when I was done and all I could think of was how long it was going to take me.

I went to a fabric swap a few weeks ago and I got the gorgeous Kaffe Fassett Coleus print on the left. I immediately knew it would be perfect for my quilt backing as the colors were perfect! However, there was  not enough for the entire back. Initially I thought I'd pair it with a solid. Then a fiend of mine asked me to go look at sewing machines with her at Stitchhouse. Stitchhouse is getting ready for a Kaffe Fassett meet and greet and had a huge assortment of fabric and picked out the Dahlia design on the right.

I LOVE how my quilt turned out. I am typically not a fan  of pastel colors, but I think since I went heavy on the blues and green, it works for me.

When I first cut out all  my fabrics, I had selected an orange sherbet colors fabric for the yellow. As I laid all my pieces out to begin chain piecing, the orange just glared out at me in a bad way. I had fabric from the Spaced Out Collection left, so I found a yellow in my stash and just made new pieces.

As I was chain piecing, I almost swapped the position of the yellow with the purple. I'm so happy I ignored that thought because I can't imagine a better color of the center of the design.

When it came to to do the quilting, I decided to do organic wavy lines. I used the walking foot on my Bernina and to get started I made my first line starting from one side going to the other weaving in and out of my safety pins from basting down a straight line.

I'm so please with how the quilting came out, that I will definitely do this method again. Was it quick - not really, but it didn't feel like it took forever either. I spent about 12 hours on the quilting. Which in my mind, isn't too bad.

The Spaced Out Collection has some really fun prints. One is a money  print. There's also one with playing cards, and one with a circuit board design.

I have discovered that it's especially hard to photograph low volume prints after quilting.

The print with pink  below reminded me of confetti.

The photo below shows another design with a pop of color. It was one with little hearts on it. Also shown is one that has scissors that look like they are cutting out a pattern. I know - it's hard to see these details, but that's part of what's great about a good low volume print - the print doesn't steal the show,

Below is the mushroom print, music notes, cotton labels, and something that reminds me  of dandelions.

Around the yellow you can see the 2 prints that have the most colors in them. They are both floral designs.

I had so much fun sewing this fabric collection. I definitely had a few favorite prints. Some of the simpler designs were my favorites, but also loved the more novelty prints.

This week I finished my Vintage Lace Quilt (pattern by Lo and Behold Stitchery) that I made with the Spaced Out Collection by Chelsea Designworks for Studio e Fabrics.

I pieced the back with these two gorgeous Kaffe Fassett prints. I'll post a full blog post in a few days.

I had a helper when I was quilting this large throw

I'm making slow but steady progress onbmy locker hooking rug. I feelblike I'm never going to be done.

I did organic wavy lined quilting on my Vintage Lace Quilt. I really love how it turned out.

Over the weekend I made myself two pairs of joggers and a cardigan. I got these done just in time for our first cold snap of fall.  I'll get photos of these soon to share.

I decided to enter my Dia de Los Muertos quilt into the Day of the Dead Quilt Show in McKinney. I dropped it off on Saturday. There was a Day of the Dead festival on Saturday and I enjoyed visiting all the booths of Mexican goodies and bought myself a cute hand embroidered t-shirt.

I ended the weekend quilting my Retrogradient Quilt.  I'm determined to get some quilts finished before the end of the year.

This week, I'm going to see if I can get another quilt finished and I want to finish a wall hanging for my bathroom.
