Dia de Los Muertos Wall Hanging

I have wanted to make a Dia de Los Muertos (Day of the Dead) Quilt for a while. I finally decided to do it and had an idea - I'd make it as a wall hanging. I envisioned getting photos of my deceased loved ones printed on fabric at Spoonflower and then pinning those photos onto the wall hanging. I think I came pretty close to the vision I had in my head.

First I had to make the wall hanging. I found some free Dia de Los Muertos clip art online that I had printed at Spoonflower with my photos. These I added in with my fabrics of Sugar Skulls. I used some Chenille-it  to give a little pop to the banner.

Most of the fabrics I used were given to me by generous members of the sewing community. I posted about my plan to make this wall hanging and asked if anyone had scraps of fabric that had Sugar Skulls and the like that they were willing to part with. I had several people offer me their fabrics, many wouldn't even let me pay for postage.

Some sent small scraps or fat quarters, while a few sent half yards and I even got some full yards. I was able to use the fabric for backing and for my mini photo quilts.

I really loved this fabric and  received two smaller scraps from two different people. I used every square inch of this fabric.

Here is my Dia  de Los Muertos Wall Hanging with all  the photos attached. It ended up being quite heavy and I might have to rethink my plan for hanging it. I bought some heavy duty double sided tape, but this might be too much weight for it.

On the top left, I have displayed my father with his adoptive parents, his birth mother is shown below the banner on the left. The right side I show my maternal grandparents with my uncle below the banner.

I added this photo  of my maternal grandmother and her two brothers. I also have a photo of my uncle when he graduated from high school. I didn't have many photos handy when I decided to print the photos.

I added a phot of my maternal grandmother in a parade. She loved parades and looks so happy in this photo and I just had to use it.

I also didn't have many photos of my father since we were estranged when he passed. I  found a photo he posted on Facebook and downloaded it. I couldn't print it very big.

I also loved this photo of my grandmother. I had fun embellishing  the photos.

I used chenille-it and rick rack on the photos for fun.

I love how my wall hanging turned out and I might try to make some new photo quilts next year to replace some of these as I come across photos that I like better. Some of these are double sided as I printed a bunch  of photos,  I only showed the one side of them in these photos,
