Diagonal Dazzle Quilt Pattern by Mix Measure Make

I recently finished testing the Diagonal Dazzle Quilt by Danielle of Mix Measure Make. I'm not going to lie - this quilt took me a long time to make, but it was so worth it. Just look at all those tiny squares! They are 1" finished and there are hundreds of them to make.  I also decided to make a scrappy version of the quilt. The quilt requires three colors plus a background fabric.

I was given  a large amount of fabric scraps from a member of our local sewing group on Facebook. She  had an etsy shop at one time and cut her items in batches from the fabric folded in half which left a long strip down the middle of the yardage that was about 10" wide. One fabric that was in large abundance was a white fabric with a black space print. I decided to use it as my background. I probably have enough of this fabric for 2 more quilts.

I then needed to pick my colors. This took me a bit and after playing with fabrics for a day I decided on a royal blue, a turquoise/mint green, and purple.

I was particular with which fabrics I selected for my blue and turquoise/mint colors. For blue, I tried to stay as close as possible as I could to a royal blue and included blues with  green in the print. For the Turquoise/mint colors I kept to a few fabrics which some all came from  the same collection. I did allow them to range from a pale mint with a white print to a dark turquoise. I find that adding in different tones in  the same color family adds depth and interest.

When it came to the color purple, I had to dig to find enough fabric scraps that were even close to being purple-ish. I added  in some more pinkish purples and some prints that were equal parts blue and purple. I also had a print that  was purple based, but had bits of red and brown in the print.

I absolutely love how my Diagonal Dazzle Quilt turned out! As my scraps were cut into the quilt pieces, I was extremely worried that my quilt was going to turn out hideous. As I slowly pieced together the units, I really loved how the colors played together and embraced the variety of the purples. All my fears evaporated when I took my completed top outside to get a photo and loved how bright and playful it turned out.

The Diagonal Dazzle Quilt comes with two different sets of instructions. There's one set that I followed that uses less fabric. It uses zero waste techniques such as 4 at a time flying geese and making 2 half square triangles at a time. This method does require trimming pieces and blocks as you go. The second method creates two quilts! It uses more fabric and uses zero waste techniques, but you make flying geese and half square triangle individually, but sew a second line of stitches to make a bonus half square triangle. After you make the Diagonal Dazzle Quilt like mine above, you can them make a second smaller quilt with the bonus blocks.

This is Danielle's first quilt pattern and I was so impressed with the instructions and all the sewing tips and tricks in the pattern. It's on sale for a limited time for the release.

Week ending March 20, 2022

I had a busy week! I had 2 "normal" blog posts this week. This coming week is going to be extremely busy as well. The Blue Grotto Quilt by Lifting Limits Quilting was released and I was so excited to finally share my version. See that Blog Post HERE

I am loving being an ambassador for Jaftex Fabrics and I got a package in the mail from them for a challenge we have coming up. They sent a variety of "blender" fabrics for me to have on hand to use as they send me future collections to work on.   The card that was enclosed was so cute. I think I will frame the front and hang it in my sewing room.

We will be doing a challenge this Spring using the Creative Grids 6" Scrap Crazy templates and got a booklet on pattern idea by Karen Montgomery. I'm excited for the challenge and already have an  idea in mind. Now I just have to wait and see what fabrics I am sent.

I ordered myself a rotating cutting mat! As I work on my pattern test for Mix Measure Make, I thought it might make life easier when trimming blocks.

Just working away on some four at a time flying geese.

Finally have all my flying geese made!

I also had a blog post for a t-shirt pattern that released - The  Bondi 22 and Add-on Sleeve pack from Sinclair Patterns. Read that post HERE

On Friday I went to Stitchhouse for Fun Friday! They had 35% off all fabric and it was definitely a good time for me to buy a few wide quilt backs. I eyed those gorgeous Melody Miller floral ones but couldn't decide which one to get! But I'm going back this coming week to take my machine in for a repair and they will still be on sale so I will grab one then.

After ironing all my flying geese I had to snap a few photos.

I laid out my pieces to start making units and realized that I had not made all the half square triangle that I needed. I had the fabrics already cut. I just hadn't sewn them. And I'm not sure why....

I had to wash a pillow size version of a quilt to take photos. Smaug loves sleeping with this little mini quilt. The post for it will be live on March 22. But the pattern is already available in a sneaky early release here

I really hope I can say that I'm done (or almost done) with my pattern test for Mix Measure Make next Sunday. I'm going to put away laundry and work on it a bit more before this Sunday ends.

Have a great week everyone!

Lazy Cozy Quilts - Mod Cabin Quilt Pattern

I'm so excited to share my latest quilt pattern test. I recently tested the Mod Cabin Quilt Pattern for Lazy Cozy Quilts (Posting this very late - I tested this pattern back in April and forgot to hit publish!). I tested the throw size and knew I would love this quilt for myself. I am often cold sitting at my desk in the fall and winter and thought I could use a throw to put over my lap.

Since I was making this for myself, I decided to use some of my favorite fabrics. I love just about anything by Anna Maria Horner and have long hoarded a few designs. One is Centerpiece from the Hand Drawn Garden collection. The print is large and I wanted a pattern that would highlight the centerpiece fabric.

The collection of flowers and colors in the Centerpiece design is just perfection. I paired it with designs from the Field Study and Dowry Collections.

The pattern includes the option to add a border to the quilt top. Initially I wasn't going to add one. But then when I saw my completed top I realized that the Eggplant Cracking Code print really stood out. I only had scraps left of that print and did not have enough left to make a border.

I went online to find some more fabric and ordered two yards. When I received it, it was the wrong color. I was crushed. I was ready to admit defeat and leave my quilt top without a border. Then my sweet friend Sharon (her blog is Sweet Mama Life) let me know she had two small cuts in her stash. I sent my son to her house to pick them up and I had to do a lot of piecing to get my border completed.

I added the border and at the time the bluebonnets were in full bloom and I decided to go to a nearby field to get photos.

I have to admit, adding the border was the perfect touch to the top. I love how it frames it.

Of course I had to do a quilt swirl photo to post on Instagram for #quiltswirlwednesday

I timed myself making this quilt top as it is touted to be able to be made in a day. Other testers also timed themselves and I have to admit, I was so much slower than most of them. It took me exactly 2 hours and 11 minutes to piece the top without the border. That doesn't include the time to cute the pieces - I would say that took about an hour. I also didn't time how long the border portion took since I wasn't able to cut just the strips I needed. If I had cut the border with the rest it probably would have added a few more minutes.
