Sofiona Designs 3rd Anniversary Sale

My selfish apparel sewing has been very little the past 18 months. The  Pandemic has really changed how I work, dress, and what I do. I haven't worked in the office since March 2020. I've resorted to wearing mostly athlesiure wear. I would say athletic wear, but really I'm not all that athletic. I do more than work in my athlesiure wear - I do get in exercise throughout the day. It's been great and I've been able to lose some weight and inches. So when I was contacted by Sofiona Designs to see if I was interested in sewing a few of their patterns I said yes! I have been in need of better fitting clothes. I don't mind wearing baggy clothes, but I thought it would be nice to have just a few new pieces that were in my new size.

I knew I wanted to make the  Miss Trail Joggers. I wanted a top to wear with them and decided the Miss Birch Sweater would be a great top that would be casual enough for my walks in the neighborhood, but still nice enough to wear with some nicer pants or jeans to work. I also thought a new pair of leggings may not be a bad idea either and picked out the Miss Tamarack Tights.

The Miss Birch is a super comfortable top. I am 5ft tall and did not make any height adjustments for the top. I would say it runs a little short and would advise to lengthen it if you are of average height. I made the size 8 based on my bust measurement.  My hips are a few sizes bigger and I probably should have sized up the bottom band so it was not as tight. The print is a cotton jersey and the black is a thermal (waffle) knit. The cotton jersey is not especially stretchy.  Overall the fit is good and  I would make minimal adjustments when making it again.

The Miss Trail Joggers have a design that I have only seen on tights before. I made a size 16 based on what I think my hips are (I think I need a sewing friend to help me measure)  and my thigh measurement. I did size down the waist a tad, and used a smaller elastic for the waistband. I took out 2" from the length for my height. This seemed almost perfect. I would probably add back a half inch when making them again as I like my ankles covered when seated.

For my Miss Trail Joggers I used a textured athletic knit from Zenith & Quasar. It has a bit of an optical illusion effect as it looks black at an angle and teal when viewed straight on.

The pockets on the Miss Trail Joggers are nice and large. However they are placed very forward on the leg and feels a bit awkward when I put my phone in the pocket. The pockets are not bagged and I attached them using a reverse coverstitch. I then did a reverse coverstitch on the other seams to give them a sporty look.

The back pieces have shaping over the rear. I have an ample bum and found that I could have used an extra half inch added to the rise as the waistband dips a little bit at the back center seam. You can see it peeking out from under my top.

The Miss Tamarak Tights have some fun colorblocking options, but I wanted to keep them simple and solid. I have found that I wear my solid colored leggings way more than my color blocked ones. Colorblocking is so fun, but I have a hard time picking out colors that look great together.

I decided a while back to keep my wardrobe to a few main colors and doing so has really made getting dressed easier and less stressful. My two main colors are green and blue and I pull in pops of purple and yellow. These purple tights were really needed in my closet. I love the dark and rich color. These are made with an athletic knit from Zenith & Quasar

Here's a look at the simple color blocking I did from the pattern. I did a reverse coverstitch on the seams for a sporty look.

Here's another view of the colorblocked design. I didn't wear my shoes in these photos because I realized after the first few photos that my shoes had gotten muddy on my walk to this spot.

Sofiona Designs is celebrating their 3rd year anniversary. All patterns are on sale for 40% off. These are the only patterns I have tried from Sofiona, but they have many more. The drafting seems to be spot on and the  instructions were clear. I was able to get all three items made over 2 days. I cut them all out on one day and sewed all three up the next day - with time to spare.

Week ending October 24, 2021 in my Sewing Room

I didn't do much this week.  I was so busy with work and didn't have much free time when I got off.

On Monday I got mail from Minerva. They sent me fabric and a pattern to sew up.  I'm making view A of this new look pattern. The fabric is a cotton voile.

I started a quilt pattern test for Frannie B Quilt Co. It took me forever to decide on fabric and this is what I settled on.  I decided to use some vintage ditsy floral prints and my scrappy background is 5 or 6 low volume light colored prints.

I had a tumble Wednesday on my lunchtime walk and really bruised up my right hand. It hurt and was swollen,  so I took two days off from sewing to let it heal.

I got out my Sew Easy ruler/cutter since my hand was tender and couldn't handle using the rotary cutter. I bought this at a garage sale about 5 years ago and this was my first time using it. I love it! I'll definitely be using all the time now.

Friday evening I got my star block made for the Stargazing Quilt Pattern that I'm testing for Frannie B Quilt Co. I signed up for the block test, but I'm hoping to make the throw size quilt.

Saturday I went through a few bins in the garage. We are planning on moving some shelves around and switching everything to smaller storage containers.  Before we do, we are going through everything to see what needs to go, and what we need to keep. I was excited to get to the storage bin with my grandmother's quilts. This is the quilt she made and gave to me for my graduation and wedding.

Here's the note she wrote on the back. She left her signature and date on all her quilts and often left a little note about the quilt.

I also have this Indian girl quilt that she made. I'm not sure why or how I ended up with this quilt.

I also have this patriotic quilt top she made and hemmed to use as a table cloth. She gave it to me when she came to my house one year for a fourth of July cookout. We have used it a few times. I am thinking of turning it into a quilt. Or I might back it with something so the fabric doesn't continue to fray with use.

I took my Deltille Quilt (Pattern by Running Stitch Quilts out for a photoshoot now that it's completely finished! Here she is in all her glory. I have a short blog post about it and the backing on Minerva.com

I ended the weekend getting ally pieces cut out for my Stargazing Quilt.

This week I'm hoping to do some work on a t-shirt quilt and on my Stargazing Quilt. I have plans for the Halloween weekend that will keep me busy and not much time for sewing. I'm already counting down the days to the next Holiday - Veteran's Day - and having some time off then.

Ellie & Mac South Shore Romper

I have made an item I never thought I would make - a Romper. I always hated the idea of getting nearly naked to go pee when wearing a romper. Then Ellie & Mac had to go and release the South Shore Romper. Every single tester looked great in it. Then House of Curves did a month of rompers. The only romper that I loved on each curvy blogger was the South Shore Romper. Everyone looked amazing in it. I have to say, they convinced me. And I think I look pretty good in it too!

One other thing that had kept me from sewing a Romper was my belly. I have a medical condition that often makes my stomach swell and I look like I'm about 5 months pregnant. I worried a romper would accentuate that and the last thing I want is people asking me when I'm due. I think the wide legs that gather at the waist along with the wrap style top really help minimize the belly and bring attention up to your face.

The crossover wrap top covers great with no fear of being exposed. I really thought I would need to wear a tank under it to keep from showing too much of my chest. I did originally think about wearing a tank just so I wouldn't feel so bare when I did go to the bathroom. But it's summer in Texas and I like to avoid extra layers if at all possible.

The one thing I had issues with when sewing the South Shore Romper was adding elastic to the waist seam. I could not get it to look decent. I seam ripped once and retried with different elastic. I then cut it off and redid it without elastic. Didn't like it without elastic. Cut it off again and redid it yet again with elastic. Still wasn't crazy about it, but figured it would be covered by my sash and finished it.

I am 5' tall and did make a few adjustments. I had to remove 2” from the length of the bodice so that it would end at my natural waist. I then measured my crotch from my natural waist in front to my natural waist in the back. I found that I needed to add 1” to the front and back rises to ensure I had enough room to prevent the crotch seam to ride up uncomfortably - I probably lost most of that inch redoing that waist seam so many times. I also shortened the legs by 2” then took another 2 inches off before I hemmed them.

I really love my South Shore Romper and have plans to make another. I'm thinking I will add a waist band to my next one and widen the legs to give a fuller look like a maxi dress. I think adding elastic into a waistband will work out a lot better for me. I'm severely allergic to latex and cant have it touching my skin. I will have to be certain to wear high waisted underwear or a long tank under this to keep the elastic away from my skin.

If you have been hesitant to try a romper, I would suggest giving the South Shore Romper a try. I think you will be as pleasantly surprised as I was. All patterns are on sale for 50% off for the month of August. No code needed.

5 out of 4 Patterns Michelle and Sheila

5 out of 4 Patterns has two new patterns that are great wardrobe basics - the Michelle Fitted Tee and the Sheila Everyday Tee and Dress. I really didn't think I would like Michelle as is is a fitted tee, but I think it actually makes me look thinner. However, I have been hesitant to actually wear my Michelle out of the house for fear that my belly is too obvious in it. I know - I should probably get over that irrational fear.

I have a laundry basket of fabric stashed under my sewing room table. This basket contains fabric that I had intended to destash before I moved and ended up using as packing material for my fragile items. I am honestly too lazy to destash and told myself to use that fabric for fit tests and when I'm not too sure I will like something I am testing.

This elephant print brushed poly came from that basket and I love this Michelle Tee so much! I love how it looks with these taupe distressed knit pants that I made recently. Now I just need to get over my insecurities and actually wear this outfit out of my house. It is so comfortable!

Here is Sheila! Sheila definitely has a more relaxed fit. I can throw my Sheila Tee on and not worry about those cookies that I ate for breakfast showing through.

I made this Sheila using a cotton/poly/spandex jersey from that basket under my sewing table. I was drawn to this funky print at a shop in the fabric district, but once I got it home, I wasn't too sure about the colors and it was a wonky cut remnant.

It was the perfect knit to use for the Sheila. Perfect weight and just the right amount of stretch and drape.

Now that I sewed up this fabric, the print and color combination are interesting and my Sheila looks amazing with my taupe pants! I immediately wore this outfit one weekend when I had a bunch of shopping to do and was so comfortable.

So, which one do you like the most Michelle or Sheila? They are both currently on sale, so no need to pick just one. I love both and hope to make a few new ones for this fall. I will probably make a few Michelle's as layering pieces and a few Sheila's for casual wear. Both patterns are on sale through Sunday,  August 4th.

Ellie & Mac Sunny Day Dress

I love the Ellie & Mac Sunny Day Dress. It goes together quickly and looks great on. It's the perfect summer dress. As I was getting ready to pack up and move, I often got distracted in my sewing room. I went through a bit of a sewing frenzy thinking I needed to sew up a bunch of fabric so I wouldn't have to move it. With my stash - that was a  joke. I mean- I'd still have to move my clothes - so what was the point. I think the point was I would rather sew than pack.

So as I went through my fabric, I did decide that I could stand to part with some. Other fabrics were kind of special to me or I had them reserved for something in particular. This fabric fell into that category. I got this fabric from my sweet friend Sneha. She used to live in the DFW area, but now lives far away in Canada. Ever since she gave me this fabric, I knew I needed to make something for summer with it.

Since I know I can whip up a Sunny Day dress in about 30 minutes, I went for it! I even attempted to pattern match and did pretty darn good. I immediately wore it and took photos there on the front yard of my now "old" house. Packing and moving kept me so busy, that I didn't have time to blog until recently.

I've worn this dress many times since I made it and it always makes me think of my sweet friend. I'll be visiting Canada on a cruise later this year. I'm hoping I can convince Sneha to visit me at one of my ports of call.

Ready to make a Sunny Day Dress or any Summer Dress? Ellie & Mac is having a Summer Dress Event! All dress patterns are on sale for an additional 20% off with the code SUMMERDRESS. Make any Ellie & Mac dress and upload a photo to their Summer Dress Event Album HERE to be entered to win a prize!

Zenith & Quasar Knit Seersucker!

Seersucker has to be the quintessential fabric of summer. I was so excited when Lilly stocked a KNIT seersucker at Zenith & Quasar. Yes - knit! It has the look and texture of a seersucker woven, but has the ease of wear that you get with a knit. It's also an athletic knit. I plan to see if I can sneak a swimsuit out of my scraps - or I may just give in and buy more.

Here's an up close shot so you can see the texture of this turquoise seersucker knit.

I had to make one of my favorite dresses with it - the Ellie & Mac Be Dreamy Dress. This dress just has a summer vibe to it and I can't stop making them.

I do make my Be Dreamy Dress a bit different than the pattern. I know I have quite the behind, so I add some width to the top of the back skirt and gather it slightly. I really don't need it, but I feel better knowing my booty has a little extra wiggle room.

I feel so fancy wearing a maxi dress. I love having my legs covered.

The flutter sleeves are so cute and easy. They are just a circle with a circle right in the middle. On this dress, I decided to offset the armhole so that I had more fabric draping over the top of my arm and less under it. Part of the reason I did this was because I ran out of fabric! I barely had two 15" squares to ge my sleeves out of. So I improvised and LOVE the result. I think all future Be Dreamy Dresses I make will have offset armholes.

My neckline ended up a bit high due to the high recovery in the stretch of this knit. If I thought I had enough fabric left, I would lower the neckline and attach a new neckband.

This gorgeous turquoise seersucker knit is available at Zenith & Quasar for $18/yard. It is 50" wide  and the stripes run horizontally. I cut my dress cross grain because I wanted vertical stripes. The fabric is 55% polyester, 40% nylon, and 5% spandex with 4-way 50% stretch. This fabric is great for so many things. It screamed DRESS to me, but I think it would be so cute as a swimsuit, a crop top with white shorts, or as culottes with a white tank.

Zenith & Quasar Constellations

Are you tired of my Zenith & Quasar reprint posts yet? I hope not - I have a few more possibly planned. It depends on how well my move goes...

This is the Constellations print. This print was the first ever strike off I did for Zenith & Quasar! Below is a photo of the back of the top I made February 2015!

No photo description available.

And here is the Greenstyle Creations Lille Racerback Tank I made May 2019!

The Lille Racerback Tank is great for working out in or for casual wear. I used a white supplex for the bands.

I did not wear a racerback bra for my photos - so no photos of the back.

I have also made leggings with this Constellations print before. I probably made these in 2017.

As you can see from the photos above, the more recent print of the Constellations is slightly more purple.

I love it regardless of the color. Be sure to check out all the prints at preorder through June 29th! Check them out at https://www.zenithandquasar.com/product-category/preorder-r34-reprints/
